Gladiator May Day
Gladiator May Day (GMD) is a day designated to bring out the kid in all of us. It is a day dedicated entirely to adults to promote being outdoors and to spend time with family and friends. It is a full day of sports and field events similar to those you experienced as a child. The whole premise of the day is to get everyone out moving and having fun.
How It All Began:
GMD came about one February Evening in 2009 at the park. Diona and I were playing and reminiscing about childhood days on the jungle gym when we thought it would be great to have a sports day for our friends to battle it out gladiator style. So we began to plan and prepare. With the help of friends, who were just as excited as we were about the idea, our jungle gym relay race became an all day event that included flag football, water balloon fights, and kickball.
Since our inception, GMD continues to draw people and their families. We encourage a potluck environment and ask that everyone contribute something to the games-(snacks, baked goods, drinks, supplies, new ideas, and time).
Thanks to all of our friends and family that come to participate, Gladiator May Day continues to be a way to reunite old friends and a forum to make new ones.

Events and Rules
Every year the games for GMD are as follows: Flag Football, Field Events, and another Group Sport ie. Kickball. These games don't require any previous experience and or knowledge. The rules are explained before the start of the game. The points are earned collectively, and the team with the most points wins the gladiator games. You may not participate if you have an injury or a pending injury, be smart and make sure you're healthy before playing. We waive any responsibility for any injuries that can and may occur during your participation.
Good sportmanship is expected throughout the games. No personal attacks and fights will be condoned. You will be asked to sit out and leave if your behavior becomes a problem.
Captains:
Are selected by Diona and Janice. The number of teams (around 4-6) we have depends on how may people are participating.
Team members:
During registration, we ask you to put your GLADIATOR NAME in a bucket, one designated for women players and the other for men. Then we randomly select names from each bucket for each team. So if the team captain is a guy, we will choose the next name in the female bucket and then the male bucket so on and so forth. Players who register late must sit out and wait out for the next play. All jewelries must be worn off. And no player shall be wearing any type of metal brace.
Flag Football:
The game shall be played between 2 teams of 8 players each, 4 men and 4 women. In case injuries occurs, games can continue if there are still 6 players in your team. If not, its an automatic forfeit. A coin toss will determine a selection of either, a beginning possession of the ball or defending a specific goal
Flag Belt - Each player must wear a one piece belt that is free of any knots clipped at the waist line. Flags will be checked out to each team on site. Shirts must be tucked in and flag belts must be worn on the outside of all clothing!
Length of Game - A game shall consist of 2 halves of 15 minutes with the clock stopping the last one minutes of each half and for all timeouts. Teams receive two 1 minute time outs per game. Half time shall be 5 minutes. If the score is tied after the two halves, overtime shall be played.
Ball in Play - The offense must snap the ball within 10 seconds after the Referee has blown the whistle to put the ball in play. Penalty: Delay of Game, 5
Dead Ball - A live ball becomes dead as provided in the rules, or when an official sounds the whistle, or otherwise declares the ball dead.
Rules:
1. QB cannot run with the ball
2. Cannot pass/hand the ball behind the line of scrimmage and run with the ball
3. May "shotgun" the ball instead of it being hiked.
4. Rushers cannot rush the quarterback until 4 "burpees" are done. Designate someone in the team to do "burpees". Can choose to have multiple rushers.
5. Offense can block rusher(s) only with extended arms.
6. All players are eligible to receive ball.
7. Ball must be caught beyond line of scrimmage.
8. Receiver cannot advance ball if he falls down and is not touched or flagged.
9. Receivers must have 1 foot in-bounds for legal catch.
10. Shovel passes are allowed.
- The gender that concludes the possession does not affect any other gender rules.
- e.g. A throw from a girl to a guy
11. No kickoffs and no punts (if you punt the other team starts at the 10 yard line).
12. Interceptions can be advanced for yardage or points.
13. Fumbles beyond the line of scrimmage are dead at the point of fumble; no change of possession.
14. Initial bump-n-run on line of scrimmage only (male vs. male and female vs. female only).
15. Absolutely no blocking or setting picks down field.
16. Defense is not allowed to strip ball after receiver catches ball.
17. Field is 60 yards long.
18. Possession starts at the 10-yard line. Team has:
- 4 attempts to make a first down at the 30-yard line
- 4 attempts to make a first down at the 10-yard line
- 3 attempts inside the 10-yard line to make a touchdown
19. Girl Quarterback cannot be rushed until you count 5"burpees" (jump, to squat, to push-up is one burpee) and must still rush from 8 yards back.
- Person doing the burpees does not have to be the person rushing
20. Girl Quarterback pass cannot be intercepted by a guy defender (an intercepted pass by a guy will be considered a knock-down). Tipped pass (or juggling or any other lack of possession) that ends up in the possession of a girl defender is an interception.
21. Girl Quarterback may not pass the ball behind the line of scrimmage (double pass play).
22. Any catch by a girl is an automatic first down with the ball spotted where the play ends.
23. Any intended girl receiver cannot be touched by another guy defender while the ball is in the air (that includes accidental and minor contact while trying to break up the pass or knocking the ball down). Any penalty of this nature is considered a catch by the girl and therefore subject to the girl catch automatic first down rules above. Girls may intentionally put out arms or legs to make it harder for a guy defender to avoid the girl receiver. Girl defenders are subject to the normal interference rules.
24. A girl must touch a ball every 3 plays.
25. Guys may defend Girls and Vice versa.
Scoring:
- Guy throws a TD that results in a TD to a Guy = 1 pt.
- Girl either catches or throws a TD to or from a Guy = 2 pts.
- Girl throws a TD directly (no intervening shovel passes) to a Girl outside of the 10 yard marker (based on the line of scrimmage, not the point of pass) = 6 pt
Field Events:
Each team will select defenders and runners, equally selecting guys and girls.

Field Events:
Each team will select defenders and runners, equally selecting guys and girls.
- Power Ball:
- Runners will wear flags, grab a ball from their bins and have one minute of play to run and dunk the ball in the containers situated in the middle of the field, in order to cross to the other side. If your flag is pulled you immediately head to the other side. Donn a new flag and grab a new ball to run across with. Each ball in the basket scores a point.
- The defenders job is to block the ball from going in while staying within bounds of their area. Area will be marked. They can also reach and pull the Runners flag to cause a "dead" ball and force the runner to head to the opposite side and begin again.
- ASSAULT "MARIO KART"
-
1. The Runners' objective is to finish
the obstacle course under 2 minute without getting hit by a water balloon
thrown by the defenders. Runners must touch all 7 bases and
complete a task on each base. Each base is safe. Once the runner
is on base, and doing the task, the defender may not hit them with a
waterballoon, if the defenders do so, it doesn't count. Runners can only
be hit once they have completed their task and left the base. If the
Runner completes the course, your team is awarded a point. If the runner
is hit, he/she is disqualified. The top 3 fastest team time will
earn points based on their standing. Fastest team earns 3 points,
then followed by the next team which earns 2 and so on.
2. The defenders are given 4 balloons each, which they will use to hit the runner to prevent them from reaching the next base. They aren't allowed to throw a waterballoon at the runner, if the runner is completing a task. Once they have exhausted all balloons, or the runner reaches the last base, the game is over.
